The Lessons of BP Apply to Fracking

In states like New Mexico and Colorado, hydrofracking is contaminating the drinking water. The film, Gasland, shows numerous cases of homeowners who sold drilling rights to their land only to find that after the drilling their water became unusable — harming their own living circumstances and totally trashing future land values. Some households displayed black or brownish water from their taps, a few demonstrated that the water contained so much benzene that the homeowner was able to ignite the water as it came out of the tap.

Despite these safeguards, the oil and gas industries successfully lobbied Congress during the Bush administration for exemptions for hydrofracking. (As it happens, hydrofracking is a process used profitably by Halliburton where former vice president Dick Cheney was once CEO.) Hydrofracking was established as permissible with no need to comply with federal environmental safeguards. As a result, Americans must rely on state regulations.

“Never doubt that a small, group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” Continue reading

Award-Winning HBO Doc Examines CO Fracking

Everyone was a film critic Monday at a somewhat tense screening of the new anti-gas-drilling documentary “Split Estate” for the Garfield County commissioners. Most of the reviews — surprisingly, even from the industry — were glowing.

“Split Estate,” an award-winning documentary detailing the environmental conflicts between surface property owners and mineral-rights holders allowed to extract natural gas from their land, was screened for the commissioners at the request of the Grand Valley Citizens Alliance, which hopes to get a resolution from the board supporting greater federal oversight. Cabot, Halliburton and the Poisoning of Dimock, PA

by edward berbaum
I live near Dimock PA and it is not like “America” any more. More like Iraq. Homeowners are trapped, unable to sell their homes and live in fear every day of illness, noise, very bad roads, unable to drink their water from the natural source. Children can no longer play outdoors. It is the worst assault I have seen on innocent Americans. Mr. Greg Vitali should be Governor ! The way he thinks and communicates is on the correct side of this act of, what I call terrorism against PA residents. The landmen LIED to leases signed and I do not mean “A” Landmen I mean ALL landmen as far as I have found. It is a criminal act that has not been dealt with. Thank you Mr. Vitali for your efforts. Hope you stay with us.

One Family’s Story of a Poisoned Well in Dimock, PA

Cabot Oil and Gas Corporation had just begun hydraulic fracturing gas drilling in their area. It was August of 2008.

Soon the The Sautner family began to suffer from dizziness, hives, and gastrointestinal pain. Their 19 year-old daughter had to lie on the floor after taking a shower in discomfort.

Three surface spills have already occurred in the vicinity, and Julie said that she and her family live in fear of another spill every day.

Testing by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) has confirmed high concentrations of iron, magnesium, sodium chloride, and highly saturated methane gas in Sautner’s water. The family has received a letter confirming the toxicity, according to Craig.

The Sautner family says they have lost not only their water, but also their dignity and privacy, as they now must receive daily water deliveries from a large tank located in their driveway.

Cabot Oil and Gas has been forced to make reparations. The DEP reported in November 2009 that Cabot paid a $120,000 civil penalty for the violations.

Documented violations against Cabot have been numerous, indicating much of what can go wrong with hydraulic fracturing. In September of 2009, the DEP temporarily banned Cabot from fracking after three polluted waste-water spills occurred in the Dimock area, polluting wetlands and reportedly poisoning the fish. The prohibition was removed after the company complied with a remedial action.

Harsh Environmental and Human Costs of Fracking from TX to PA

From compressor stations emitting known human carcinogens such as benzene to the poor lining of wells after drilling that has led some water taps to literally spout flames, the full set of activities needed to produce natural gas gives rise to a panoply of potential problems.
