Texas: Benzene in the air… More Air monitors planned for Texas drilling area

Earlier this year, the agency released results of testing at 94 sites across the Barnett Shale, revealing two sites with extremely high levels of benzene and 19 more with elevated levels of the chemical. Continue reading

“Natural gas” hurts the environment more than it helps: demystifying the T. Boone Pickens plan…

The natural gas industry likes to cast itself as a green alternative in the fight against global warming, with folks like T. Boone Pickens and his allies at the forefront of the effort to increase gas use for electricity generation and as an automobile fuel.
Now Congress appears ready to provide taxpayer subsidies in a Senate energy bill for parts of the Pickens plan. But let’s be sure we’re getting good public policy, not just an expensive public relations push.
To date, little evidence has surfaced to support the notion that increasing our use of natural gas will actually help the environment. In fact, an increase in natural gas usage could hurt the environment more than it helps.

Let’s start with the concept that natural gas is “clean.” If you look at a coal-fired power plant versus a gas-powered plant, gas looks better at first blush because there is less carbon dioxide per kilowatt coming out of the gas plant’s smokestack.

But there’s a lot more to the climate impacts of natural gas than emissions at the power plant. Leaks of methane occur at every stage of natural gas production and transport – during drilling, at the wellsite, at compressor stations, and in the pipeline. These methane leaks add up, and methane is twenty-five times more potent than carbon dioxide as a greenhouse gas. Many leaks are the result of inefficient operations and a lack of trained professionals to employ the simple, cost-effective fixes available through the EPA’s Natural Gas STAR program.

Gas production can also cause major methane leaks from outcrops of gas-bearing rock. In the Raton Basin of southeastern Colorado, dozens of these methane seeps have been identified, many of them associated with the gas industry. In the Atlantic Rim of Wyoming, the onset of coalbed methane development has resulted in new seeps rivaling the mud pots of Yellowstone National Park in size, and emitting thousands of cubic feet of gas per minute into the atmosphere.

All these methane leaks, and their emissions of potent greenhouse gases, need to be accounted for when examining the greenhouse gas emissions of natural gas versus coal. When leaks are added in, natural gas is hardly better than coal from a climate change perspective. Continue reading

No need to rush on natural gas

There are still many questions about the possibility of irreparable environmental damage associated with the extraction process. To get this gas, you blast a mixture of water, sand, and chemicals, some of them highly toxic, down a well a kilometre or two deep. This compound fractures the shale, and gas is freed to flow upward.
There are big problems with this process, the most alarming one being the danger that underground aquifers can become contaminated. Further, it emits considerable greenhouse gases. And up to 40 per cent of the chemicals used in hydraulic fracturing make their way back to the earth’s surface. There, they must be treated, and disposed of in some cases as hazardous waste.
Companies involved in shale-gas production insist that these problems have been overestimated, and that contaminated water is the result of surface spillage only. But U.S. research suggests otherwise. In 2009, the investigative journalists of ProPublica published studies on the effect of shale drilling on water supply in Colorado and Pennsylvania. The organization reported that “houses, water wells, and pipelines have exploded and people have found methane levels in their water so high that they could light it with a match.” ProPublica also found 1,000 U.S. cases where the extraction process affected water supplies.

353 of the chemicals used to extract gas or found in gas wastes have been identified and among them are known toxins

‘Drilling Isn’t Safe’ campaign launched

Four advocacy organizations, Catskill Citizens For Safe Energy, Catskill Mountainkeeper, Earthjustice and “Gasland” The Movie, have created a joint communications campaign to educate the public about the risks of shale gas extraction using high volume hydraulic fracturing technology or “fracking.” The campaign centers on the theme “Drilling Isn’t Safe.” Billboards, buttons and lawn signs are the first elements of an extensive multi-media program targeting the health risks and other problems New York residents may face if the state’s Department of Environmental Conservation begins issuing drilling permits for hydraulic fracturing. Natural gas development is largely exempt from federal environmental laws, including the Safe Drinking Water Act. According to the consortium, at least 353 of the chemicals used to extract gas or found in gas wastes have been identified and among them are known toxins, but 279 remain unknown, as do their effects on human health. The mixtures of chemicals used by gas companies in drilling and fracturing fluids are concealed from the public under industry claims that they are trade secrets. The consortium is strongly committed to preventing drilling under the current circumstances, given scientific data and documented cases that show wherever fracking occurs there is a substantial risk of drinking water contamination, air pollution and severe illness among people and animals.

Fracking Robs Owners of Land

•Oil and gas companies are exempt from the Safe Water Drinking Act. (It wasn’t always that way—thank the 2005 Energy Policy Act, passed under Bush and now known as the Halliburton Loophole.)
•Waste related to oil and gas exploration and production is exempt from the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act. (So there are no regulations on its disposal, meaning it can be handled in any way a company pleases, from being injected into the ground—regardless of its proximity to water supplies, animal habitats, etc.—to just being left on the land.)
•Because of loopholes in the Clean Air Act, oil and gas wells are not subject to restrictions on hazardous air pollutants. Garfield County, Colorado, for example, a site where a lot of fracking has taken place, has shown elevated levels of several hazardous air pollutants. Continue reading

Fracking: A Concern For Every Citizen

In spite of gas’ reputation as a “clean” form of energy, hydrofracking it appears to be anything but.
