EPA’s Fracturing Study Raises Gas Industry Ire

An 18-month investigation by ProPublica, however, has shown more than 1,000 cases [6] in which various aspects of the fracturing lifecycle have affected water supplies, including spills of fracturing fluid waste, cracking of underground cement and well casings meant to enclose the fracturing process, and methane gas traveling large distances [7] underground through faults and fractures. The Lessons of BP Apply to Fracking

In states like New Mexico and Colorado, hydrofracking is contaminating the drinking water. The film, Gasland, shows numerous cases of homeowners who sold drilling rights to their land only to find that after the drilling their water became unusable — harming their own living circumstances and totally trashing future land values. Some households displayed black or brownish water from their taps, a few demonstrated that the water contained so much benzene that the homeowner was able to ignite the water as it came out of the tap.

Despite these safeguards, the oil and gas industries successfully lobbied Congress during the Bush administration for exemptions for hydrofracking. (As it happens, hydrofracking is a process used profitably by Halliburton where former vice president Dick Cheney was once CEO.) Hydrofracking was established as permissible with no need to comply with federal environmental safeguards. As a result, Americans must rely on state regulations.

“Never doubt that a small, group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” Continue reading

Forced Pooling in PA: Gas Industry Makes Its Own Rules

The natural gas industry is asking legislators to allow them to take gas from Marcellus Shale under certain properties without a lease and against the owner’s wishes when the owner has neighbors who’ve agreed to drilling.
That’s how opponents see a provision, which they call “forced pooling,” about to be proposed in the state House of Representatives. Continue reading

The Truth About T-Boone Pickens’ Hidden Agenda

It should come as no surprise that the man behind swiftboating John Kerry (D-Massachusetts) in the 2004 U.S. presidential election, T. Boone Pickens, is at it again, as he attempts to “swiftboat” those who speak out against natural gas drilling in the Marcellus Shale. Continue reading

Energy Industry Lobbyists Rewrite PA Tax Laws and Zoning Ordinances

The natural gas industry is lobbying lawmakers to tax natural gas production at a lower rate during a well’s early years of production.

In addition, the coalition wants lawmakers to declare drilling a “use by right” in local zoning ordinances. That means drilling would be allowed, without the need for a major review by a local government, as long as it meets the standards specified in an ordinance. A local zoning permit would still be needed, but that would be issued relatively quickly. Continue reading

Energy Industry Employs Scare Tactics in NY State

“With hydraulic fracking they go in, frack the gas, they do what they can, and they move on,” Ulster County Legislator Susan Zimet said. “They can’t afford to waste any time and they can’t afford to have people understand what this issue is about because then it’s too late for them.”

She describes having environmentalists convince the state Senate to approve moratorium legislation as defeating “Goliath on a lot of levels” because the “energy industry … is very, very well-financed (and) has got million-dollar lobbyists up in Albany basically roaming the halls.”

PA Supervisors Allied With Gas Industry?

After listening for an hour and a half to impassioned pleas to fight the gas drilling company by the majority of attendees at the special meeting, the Damascus supervisors unanimously agreed to sign a consent order that will end the court case filed by Newfield.
At the meeting it was learned that all three supervisors have signed gas leases as has their attorney, Jeffrey Treat. “It’s a conflict of interest,” a resident cried with a chorus of supports echoing behind her. The supervisors made no comment. Continue reading
